Boulders: an introduction to one of our favorite varieties of stones… and apparently yours, also

Happy Memorial Day weekend everyone, from all of us at Stone Distributors to all of you! In our next several articles we are focusing on one of the most fascinating and varied types of stones we carry, Boulders.

Boulders: these days they are one of the most sought-after types of stones by landscape and hardscape designers, contractors and homeowners alike. The imaginative and innovative ways in which they are being incorporated into different walls and other designs are quite impressive.  Yet even with their popularity many people do not know there are different types of boulders available to incorporate into their projects, or how many different basic types there are.

DEFINITION: What is a Boulder? According to industry standards, a Boulder is any stone or rock that is larger than 10” in diameter. We have seen other sizes given on other sites, but 10” and above is the norm used. Boulders are often identified as being round or angular. But of course the variation of their shapes is virtually endless. Each and every Boulder is unique in shape, coloration and the rock materials contained in it.

Here are a few pictures of the 3 basic varieties our industry recognizes in our area of northern Georgia, from largest to smallest.

3 basic varieties of Boulders:

  1. Landscape Boulders (also known as large boulders, typically over 800 lbs.)
  2. Garden Boulders (400 – 800 lbs., 2 to 4 man Boulders)
  3. River Rock Boulders (1 to 2 man Boulders)

Author’s note: there are quite a few “variations” that off-shoot from these, as you will quickly notice when searching for boulders online. These are the main 3.

In the 2nd article of this mini series we will discuss one of the varieties, Landscape Boulders, in more detail. Their common uses, some of their different types and why we like them as a focal feature in a number of different hardscapes and landscapes throughout your property.
