As a stone wholesale and retail company much of the time and effort in our business here at Stone Distributors is focused on the many different types of stone we carry. Whether its Flagstone (and its multitude of varieties), Fieldstone, Garden Boulders, River Rock, Cobblestones and Ruble Strips chances are that you’re looking for stone to complete a project in or around your home or business.
The filler and other landscaping products that we carry often get lost in the mix. We are referring to the Slate Chips, Mulches, Topsoil, Gravel, Granite Sand and Masonry Sand that you are using to fill in and around the focal points of your project. These secondary products may take a back seat to the featured rocks and stones, but also play an important roll in bringing the vision of your finished stone scape or landscape to maximum life.
In addition, you should know the pros and cons of each before you decide on which one you are going to use for filler in your landscaping or stone project.
Slate Chips come in several sizes. At Stone Distributors we currently carry the Mini Slate Chips. The Minis are most often used for walking paths. They give a nicer, more elegant look as filler than straight up gravel. We carry them in an attractive Blue-gray color (a deeper gray than most of the chips and gravel you see around), as you can see in the picture. Also can be used around decks and patios.
* NOW – we have the Medium-Sized Slate Chips in stock for the first time. We will continue to carry both varieties going forward.
One of the things that the average Georgia native knows but has to be learned by those people who are transplants is that Dirt in Georgia is actually derived from red clay… In other words, we don’t have soil here naturally like you would see in the northeast or midwest. However, our finished top soil is a good, clean soil once refined for use in gardens and leveling areas for sod.
- Both types of dirts that we currently carry are not in stock at this time. They are delivery only (with a 2-yard minimum).
- ** For those that want to know, yes we will be carrying them in stock here on our lot starting later this year.
PEA GRAVEL AND LARGE RIVER GRAVEL
Pea Gravel is so named due to its rounded shape and pea-like size. In reality, Pea Gravel is really more like tiny river rock stones than like gravel. Pea Gravel is often used as filler around Flagstone, Fieldstone or even concrete bricks. And as a number of garden and landscape experts point out, you need to consider having a rake around to even out your Pea Gravel as it clumps up and groups together in uneven piles.
Large River Gravel, or just plain River Gravel are the terms often given to describe pebbles that are typically larger than (although still small) the Pea Gravel. Like Pea Gravel, Large River Gravel has a multitude of uses, including as filler or as the main component for Walkways, Driveways and Patios. It is also often used an effective mulch substitute for plants due to its ability to help prevent evaporation from the soil surface while also providing valuable drainage and erosion control.
It should be noted that Gravel is often not considered the best product to use as filler, though, as it requires more ongoing maintenance than other fillers and is more easily transported away from the areas of its original placement, often into your home.
Masonry sand is most often considered a finer version of sand than concrete sand. It is used in construction, stone and landscaping projects for its more attractive look than the concrete sand. We do carry Masonry sand in stock.
There are other “aggregates” like these that we do not carry at this time, including slag, recycled concrete and geosynthetic aggregates. Although we do not have them in stock, we are happy to procure and deliver them to whomever needs them, whether contractor or DIYer. We only require that you order a 3-yard minimum.
