STONE DISTRIBUTORS EDUCATION – Flagstone vs. Fieldstone, part 1

When you start planning a landscaping project one of the most important aspects of your plan is deciding on what materials you are going to use. For example, which type of stone do you want to use, Flagstone or Fieldstone?

In this 2-part series we will discuss all of the different aspects you will want to take under consideration when deciding upon the right type of rock for your particular project. In this 1st article we discuss the differences between Flagstone and Fieldstone, the different varieties of each that we carry at Stone Distributors and what factors will go into your decision on which stone you choose. In the 2nd article we will discuss which projects each type of rock is optimal for.

Before making your decision, you will want to know the differences between these two well-known types of rock. Furthermore, you also want to learn which type of rock is considered “better” for where you are planning on using it. There are typical uses for each, and it is important you understand why as part of your decision-making process.

First of all, what is the basic difference between Flagstone and Fieldstone? Flagstone comes from underground quarries, while Fieldstone is found above ground (not quarried), either lying on the ground or from out of the side of a mountain (as in the case of Fieldstone that we bring in from Tennessee).

Common types of Flagstone that we carry at Stone Distributors include Tennessee Crab Orchard and  Canyon Creek. Common types of Fieldstone include Ashlar, Stack, Veneer and Natural Steppers. The Stack Fieldstone comes in thin, medium, medium long and thick varieties while the veneer is available in thin and medium sizes.

You might say “It is good to know what the basic difference and different varieties are, but more important to me is what are the most important features that I am going to weigh against each other to decide which stone is the best for me to use in my project?”

Your decision between Flagstone and Fieldstone will come down to the following points:

  • What look do you want the finished product to have? Each of the aforementioned varieties has a different look to it, so you will want to find the one that you like the best.
  • How much will it cost? The different stones also have a different cost associated with them, of course. Click on this link to the price list on our website and go right to our price list to learn more.
  • How much labor cost will be involved in the job itself? Flagstone, although flatter than Fieldstone also often has more labor involved in its preparation. However, when installed Flagstone is easier to lay it flat and level.

In the 2nd part of this 2-part series on Flagstone and Fieldstone we will lay out for you the preferred applications that most people use for these two different types of rocks.
